About Us

Making books come to life for young children

About us

We are New York State certified teachers. Our certifications include both elementary education and special education, with an emphasis in early childhood education. After taking various mommy and me classes with our own children, and speaking to other parents, we recognized a need for a class which introduces books and explores these stories in a fun and creative manner. In 2007 we created The Happy Bookworm, our own parent and child classes for children 15 to 36 months.

Overview

Our literature-based parent and child classes for 15-36  month-olds engage children and bring stories to life!

We begin with a variety of tabletop activities which  help to develop early literacy, fine motor, and cognitive skills, while promoting social interactions.

Each week is a literature adventure! Our book becomes the theme for that class and introduces our letter of the day. Children interact with the story through the use of puppets, role playing and other props to dramatize the significant events of the book.  The stories are brought to life by creating art projects which enhance and reinforce the literature.

We conclude the class while still expanding upon the theme of the book. A related poem or song is introduced on large paper to emphasize print concepts. Children enjoy singing, playing instruments and performing movement activities to culminate the literature experience.

Learning through play

In a creative and fun manner children are taught fundamental reading skills which include:

  • Comprehension skills
  • Vocabulary Development
  • Print Awareness
  • Rhyming
  • Making predictions
  • Phonemic awareness
  • Retelling stories
